NOR

Questions and answers

What people ask about roasted chickpeas

On what is in them, allergens, the flavours and how NOR actually gets used. If your answer is not here, send us an email — we reply.

A better snack

Are roasted chickpeas a healthy snack?

NOR is roasted rather than deep-fried, and is 95% chickpeas. Per 100 g it gives 17 g of protein and nearly 20 g of fibre — enough to meet the EU thresholds for both “high in protein” and “high in fibre”. The ingredient list runs to three to six items, with no palm oil and no artificial additives. Whether it fits your particular diet is your call, but you will at least know exactly what you are eating.

Why choose chickpea snacks over crisps?

The practical difference is what you are left with after a bag. Chickpeas bring protein and fibre that satisfy, where traditional potato snacks mostly bring starch and fat. NOR is roasted rather than deep-fried, and we use rapeseed oil — not palm oil. The eating experience differs too: nuttier, with more resistance in the bite than the airy snap of a crisp.

How much protein is in a bag of NOR?

The bag is 100 g and our nutrition table is stated per 100 g, so the figures apply to the whole bag: 17 g of protein, and 19.9 g of fibre for Sea Salt and Vinegar & Salt (19.8 g for Spicy Honey). For comparison, 17 g of protein is in line with many protein bars.

Are chickpeas a good source of protein?

Chickpeas are a solid plant-based protein source, and in NOR protein makes up 23.7–24.3% of the energy. That is above the 20% threshold EU rules set for the claim “high in protein”. As a plant-based protein source chickpeas are also less one-sided than many alternatives, because the fibre comes in the same mouthful.

Ingredients and allergens

Is NOR gluten-free?

Yes. Chickpeas contain no gluten, and none of the three variants use gluten-containing ingredients. That is why NOR works as a crouton replacement in salads for people who have to avoid gluten.

Does NOR contain nuts?

No, none of the variants contain nuts. That is precisely why NOR works in lunchboxes at schools and workplaces that ban nuts. Note that Vinegar & Salt may contain traces of milk.

Is NOR vegan?

Sea Salt and Vinegar & Salt are vegan. Spicy Honey contains honey powder and is therefore not vegan. All three are vegetarian.

Does NOR contain palm oil?

No. We use rapeseed oil in all three variants. It is on the ingredient list on the bag too — that list is three to six items long, so it does not take long to check.

Which allergens should I watch for?

Sea Salt and Spicy Honey have no known allergens. Vinegar & Salt may contain traces of milk. The full ingredient list for each variant is on the products page.

The flavours

What is the difference between the three flavours?

Sea Salt is the cleanest — chickpea, rapeseed oil and sea salt, nothing else. Vinegar & Salt is sharp and tangy, with cider vinegar landing first. Spicy Honey is sweet up front and warm behind, with honey, paprika and cayenne. The same crisp chickpea underneath, three entirely different characters.

How hot is Spicy Honey?

Mild to medium. The honey and paprika settle in first, then the cayenne arrives from behind. The heat builds through the bag without taking over — it is built to be eaten in quantity, not to challenge you.

How do I use NOR for something other than snacking?

The most common is as a replacement for croutons in salad — the same crunch, but with protein and fibre, and gluten-free. Beyond that it works as a topping on bowls and avocado toast, as trail food since it needs no refrigeration and does not get crushed in a backpack, and as a bar snack with beer. We have collected seven uses with flavour pairings on the uses page.
